Getting the Most from your Outlines & Treatments
1 Day: Tue 30 Aug
The importance of Treatments and Outlines for a professional screenwriter cannot be overstated, a good treatment is an invaluable resource for a writer. If used correctly, it can be an incredibly valuable tool for story and script development and as an essential sales document for getting producers and funders interested in your script.
This one-day course will ensure that participants understand how to create effective treatments, outlines, beat sheets, synopsis, log lines and pitch documents - the essential tools for a professional writer.
Led by experienced Script Editor and Development Executive, Michael Kinirons, the course will also feature a panel session with Irish Film Board Production and Development Co-Ordinator, Sarah Dillon and Project Manager for Octagon Films, Aaron Farrell.

BIOGS
Michael Kinirons
Michael has worked as a freelance reader and script editor since 2004. He is an Irish Film Board recommended script editor and has read for a diverse number of agencies including the Irish Film Board, Northern Ireland Screen, the Balkan Fund and Filmbase. He completed the Script Factory's Industry Script Reading course and trained as a script editor under the tutelage of Franz Rodenkirchen and Christina Kallas within the 'Script and Pitch' programme. He has been a Development Executive for Fastnet Films and is currently Head of Development for Blinder Films.
Michael is also an award-winning writer and director whose credits include Lowland Fell, Treeclimber, The Elephant and the Seagull and Falling Angels along with three feature film projects in development with Irish Film Board support.
Aaron Farrell
As Project Manager for Octagon Films, Aaron Farrell manages Octagon's slate of projects through development and pre-production. Responsibilities include development and production finance applications, and compliance and liaison with film funders. He co-produced Cherrybomb which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2009. Aaron previously worked as a freelance Production Co-ordinator and holds an MA in Film Studies from UCD.
Sarah Dillon - Irish Film Board Production & Development Co-ordinator
Alongside the Development Executive, the Production & Development Co-ordinator assesses projects for funding, manages the Irish Film Board's development slate and is also responsible for contracting and budgetary arrangements for all development projects including features, documentaries and animations. This role also has a close consultative function in regards to all areas of production.
Sarah has over 5 years experience in the industry and holds an MA in English Literature and a BA in Media, Communications and English.

A Guide to Business Affairs Issues for the Film Industry
1 Day: Thu 22nd Sept
Mark Byrne, Head of Legal Affairs for the Irish Film Board, will lead a special one-day workshop on legal and business issues for the film industry. This introductory level course will familiarise participants with the main business issues facing professional filmmakers and film companies. In addition to covering the basics of contracts, copyrights and clearances, the course will also cover film financing, dealing with funders, and company setups.
The course is intended to ensure that emerging filmmakers have a good understanding of all the major business issues affecting them as they begin project and career development.
This course will cover:
- Understanding copyright
- Understanding contracts
- Clearances and releases
- Negotiating key contract points
- Funding your first films
- Section 481 tax financing
- Contracting with funders
- International Co-productions
- Legal and company issues for filmmakers
- Protecting Intellectual Property

Participants will also be invited to submit questions in advance of the workshop which can be dealt with on the day.

Tutor: Mark Byrne - Head of Legal Affairs, Irish Film Board
The Head of Legal Affairs is responsible for a substantial amount of the Irish Film Board's contracting requirements across all expenditure initiatives. This role involves negotiation with producers and co-financiers, and liaising with lawyers as well as government departmental officials.
Mark is a qualified solicitor with a Degree in Law and a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Administration who has over 10 years experience in the film industry. Mark is also currently on the board of directors for the Irish Film Institute.

VISA, MasterCard, Laser, company or personal cheque, cash (all in Euros) are all acceptable terms of payment.
Course Cancellation Policy:
If notice is received at least (i) 14 days in advance of the class, the Customer is entitled to a full refund, (ii) 7 days of the class, the customer is entitled to a full class credit which must be used within 3 months of the date of the original class to another class offered by Filmbase. Customer is not entitled to a refund or class credit if less than 7 day advance notice is given. Failure to provide notice at least 14 days in advance of the class obligates the Customer to pay the full price of the class.
Filmbase reserves the right to amend or cancel the date, time and location of a Training class including replacing the personnel who may be scheduled to deliver the Training. In the event a Training class is cancelled, the customer is entitled to a full refund. Filmbase shall not be responsible for any other loss incurred by Customer as a result of a cancellation or amendment.
