FILMMAKING ESSENTIALS
FILMMAKING ESSENTIALS: 5 Days, 5 Skills
5 Days: 26th - 30th March
This course is perfect for beginners, or anyone new to filmmaking who would like to get an overall view of the process.
Taught by various tutors from different discliplines, the course will cover Screenwriting, Producing, Directing, Camera and Editing. Made up of introductory lessons and practical exercises, it is a perfect inroduction to the world of Filmmaking.
Day 1 - Screenwriting
Starting with practical basics, day 1 of the course begins with the script. Students will learn the essential elements of storytelling, understanding film structure, narrative construction, character development, dialogue and visual elements. Script formatting and industry layouts will also be covered.
Day 2 - Directing
Day 2 is all about the director. The role of the director will be outlined from prep to post-production. Students will learn the importance of developing the visual concept and shooting styles. The day will also cover the director's responsibilities in working with other key crew such as Production Designer, DOP, costume designer, editor, casting director as well as the actors.
Day 3 - Production
Day 3 will look at the role of the producer. Key aspects will include project development, scheduling, budgeting, selecting Heads of Department, co-ordinating contracts and releases, sales, marketing and distribution. The day will also cover film financing, with a particular focus on funding short films.
Day 4 - Camera & Sound
Day 4 gets technical with a hands-on experience of filmmaking with camera and sound recording equipment. Essentially a crash course in the area, students will learn a range of practical tips to give confidence in working with a range of digital filmmaking equipment.
Day 5 - Editing
The final day will look at post-production with a specific focus on editing. Students will be introduced to the art of editing and to the post-production workflow. Taking place in the Filmbase Multimedia room, students will work with Final Cut Pro 7 and will cut together a sequence with an experienced editor. Students will complete the course by learning how to output their edited work to DVD or the web.

Documentary Filmmaking
Documentary Filmmaking Course - Spring 2012
8 weekends - Starts 14th April
This popular weekend course, guided by Award-winning director Colm Quinn (Needle Exchange) and aimed at beginners, encourages students to write and present documentary proposals, develop and research ideas, produce, direct and interview. Other subjects taught on this course are digital camera skills, sound recording and advice on funding & markets.
Two proposals are selected to be made into short documentaries over a weekend.

Run over 12 weekends, this hands on course will take you through the filmmaking process from script to screen, culminating in two groups shooting two short films.
With all tutors current film practitioners, this course has been designed to encourage and develop independent filmmaking. Ideal if you are looking for a way into the film industry or want to gain a better understanding of filmmaking - at the end of the course you will have a short film to use as part of a show reel for your Curriculum Vitae or film school.

Once finished this course you will have the confidence and basic skills to shoot footage and then edit it into a sequence on Final Cut Pro: the basic tools of filmmaking!

TUTOR BIOG: TANYA DOYLE
Dublin born Director Tanya Doyle established her credentials as a documentary filmmaker in 2004 when she was awarded the Prince Philip Medal of Excellence for her first film 'Moore Street', a documentary short exploring how a living monument to traditional Dublin facilitated the amalgamation of cultures in the 'new Ireland'. Tanya has pursued her insightful interest in social documentary filmmaking ever since.
Tanya's latest documentary 'The House', her directorial debut for television, is a gripping, autobiographical account of her family's experience growing up in West Dublin with an alcoholic mother and absent father and examines the ideas of home, change, progression and shared experiences through a family dealing with loss and alcoholism.

VISA, MasterCard, Laser, company or personal cheque, cash (all in Euros) are all acceptable terms of payment.
Course Cancellation Policy:
If notice is received at least (i) 14 days in advance of the class, the Customer is entitled to a full refund, (ii) 7 days of the class, the customer is entitled to a full class credit which must be used within 3 months of the date of the original class to another class offered by Filmbase. Customer is not entitled to a refund or class credit if less than 7 day advance notice is given. Failure to provide notice at least 14 days in advance of the class obligates the Customer to pay the full price of the class.
Filmbase reserves the right to amend or cancel the date, time and location of a Training class including replacing the personnel who may be scheduled to deliver the Training. In the event a Training class is cancelled, the customer is entitled to a full refund. Filmbase shall not be responsible for any other loss incurred by Customer as a result of a cancellation or amendment.
