Filmbase Editing Workshop
3 Weeks
A three-week intensive workshop where students undertake a combination of three courses: Final Cut Pro 200 (Level 1), Final Cut Pro 300 (Level 2) and Craft of Documentary Editing. Students will learn all there is to know about Final Cut Pro 7 through Apple Authorized Training while also putting these practical skills into use through the editing of a short documentary with award winning documentary filmmaker & editor Sé Merry Doyle.
Course Outline:
- FCP 200 - Comprehensive Study of Final Cut Pro: This five day, hands-on course starts with basic video editing techniques and works all the way through Final Cut Pro's powerful advanced features. Learn to mark and edit clips, mix sound, add titles, create transitions, apply filters, and more.
- FCP 300: Advanced Editing in Final Cut Pro - This three-day hands-on course teaches students hard-to-find advanced editing and finishing techniques. Learn how to create polished transitions, fix screen direction errors, edit multi-camera projects, work with nested sequences, create fantastic effects use filters creatively and composite like a pro.
- Craft of Documentary Editing - This Filmbase / Loopline course will introduce the students to the grammar of documentary editing. After a day focused on editing techniques and the combination of the elements of a documentary, each student will be asked to capture and cut a short documentary under the supervision of director / editor Sé Merry Doyle.

Music Video Editing Workshop
2 Weekends
This new Filmbase course will introduce the students to the grammar of music video editing.
After a debate on editing styles and techniques, each student will be asked to capture and cut a version of a music video by The Blizzards.
The process, supervised by the music video director, John Kennedy and by a Final Cut Pro 6 certified trainer, will end with the screening of the final results and a Q & A session.
Course Outline:
- (Day 1) Meet and greet, Explanation of the process and treatment, View rushes of the music video, Start capturing
- (Day 2) Log and Capture, Organisation of the project, Start to build the sequence
- (Day 3) Editing, Review edits to date
- (Day 4) Refining the sequence, Screening, Feedback with Tony Kearns
Students should have the following knowledge prior to attending the course:
- Basic experience using Final Cut Pro
Trainer: John Kennedy, a visual effects artist with Windmill Lane and a founder member of the directing collective Heroes For Zeroes.
Special Guest: Tony Kearns, editor of the music video by The Blizzards as well as music videos by Radiohead, U2, Chemical Brothers, Artic Monkeys, Coldplay and many more.

Craft of Documentary Editing
2 Weekends
This new Filmbase/Loopline course will introduce the students to the grammar of documentary editing. After a day focused on editing techniques and the combination of the elements of a documentary, each student will be asked to capture and cut a different short documentary. The process, supervised by a multi-award winning documentary director/editor and by a Final Cut Pro 6 certified trainer, will end with the screening of the final results and a Q & A session.
Course Outline:
- (Day 1) Lecture on Documentary Editing and an introduction to the editing assignments
- (Day 2) Overview of Final Cut Pro and the log and capture process, some technical tips for the edit and building a sequence
- (Day 3) Creating the rough cut followed by a review of each cut
- (Day 4) Refining the cut followed by a screening and discussion
Students should have the following knowledge prior to attending the course:
- Understanding of documentary filmmaking
- Basic experience using Final Cut Pro
- It is preferable if the student has attended the Documentary Foundation Course in Filmbase

Animation
Broadcast Animation Production
8 Evenings
Using a model Flash animated film, the students will be brought through the logical order of an animation production pipeline using the following applications: Adobe's Flash, After Effects, and Apple's Final Cut Pro editing software, (including audio dialog recording). Students will start with basic story principles, and script writing for animation. They will progress to storyboarding their script, designing characters and backgrounds, and creating an animatic. They will finish their film with animating and lip synching their characters, performing camera moves, and polishing their film with special effects.
In conjunction with the animation theory, the students will be creating their own animated short film. The course will culminate with a showing of their films to fellow students, friends and family.
Along with the development of student's animated short films, topics include:
- An introduction to the Broadcast Flash production pipeline and Flash interface
- Story elements and creating characters
- Animation techniques
- Story scripts and storyboarding using Flash templates
- Recording audio dialog and lip synching
- Introduction to animatic building using Final Cut Pro
- Digital layouts including camera movements
- Introduction to After Effects and final editing

Flash Animation for Young People
4 Days
Filmbase is offering a 4 day immersive course in digital animation for young people using the industry standard software Adobe Flash. Over the course of a week, students will gain a grounding in digital drawing and animation techniques as well as an understanding of storytelling through moving image. By the end of the week each student will have produced their own animated short film. This course is very hands-on, practical and, above all, FUN!
