TUTOR: ROBIN THWAITES

Robin Thwaites originally qualified as a photographer at what is now Richmond upon Thames College, near London and followed this working in various studios. He moved to become involved with a major motion picture manufacturer and rental house where he first became involved with Steadicam.

He was involved in organizing the first major Steadicam Workshop in the UK with the late Ted Churchill as lead instructor in 1987. After three more of these five day Workshops he recognized the need for a shorter introductory workshop and started to provide these on an ad-hoc basis. After 1996 the demand was so great that these had to be formalized into a regular three or four yearly event which is how they have been running since that time. Now working for Tiffen (Steadicam manufacturer) he has expanded this programme and been instrumental in formalizing a range of workshops based around various skill levels and types of system.

Robin has also run designed and run bespoke workshops for clients at their own location in the UK including several BBC regions, ITV, Sky, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. Additional overseas clients have taken Robin to the Lebanon, Iran, Greece, Dubai, Spain and Ireland. Robin has also participated as both joint instructor or technical advisor for Tiffen at Steadicam Operators Association and other workshops with both Garrett Brown and Jerry Holway in France, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, Italy and Denmark.
