Focus on Visual Effects
The June 2011 session of ShortSpace saw us taking a closer look at a number of films which incorporate a range of visual effects to create the look and feel that the filmmakers were aiming for. From WWII jet fighters, to 'found' footage and exotic locations these films give a glimpse into what's achievable by using a range of visual effects.
The Line-up:
THE GERMAN (2008)
Written and Directed by Nick Ryan
November 1940, during the greatest conflict man has ever known, an epic duel unfolds between two ace pilots, each willing to take the match to it's ultimate conclusion. Unknown to the pilots is a fate neither has considered.
Shot on 35mm (anamorphic), and posted at 2K, the opening of the film is an aerial battle between a British Spitfire and a German Me 109, all of which was completed at Image Now Films over a six month period. This is a combination of Live action/stills and fully CGI shots. There are over 120 Effects shots in the 10 Minute film, all of which the director completed himself. Models were built by Dave Head at Image Now, and Nick Ryan textured, lit, animated, rendered and composited the entire film.
OF BEST INTENTIONS (2008)
Written and Directed by Brian Durnin
Destiny isn't always straightforward. Sometimes, despite our best intentions, we find ourselves helplessly subject to fate's fickle whim.

Selected in competition for The Tribeca Film Festival (2009), nominated for the Best Short Film Award in the IFTA's (2009), winner Best International Short at Raindance Film Festival London and winner Best International Short and Best Cinematogaphy Filmare Rome.
THE CHRONOSCOPE (2009)
Written and Directed by Andrew Legge
The Chronoscope tells the story of a female inventor who is kidnapped by the Third Reich after she invents a camera with the power to see into the past. The short film was written and directed by Andrew Legge and produced by Fastnet Films. The film was funded under the Wicklow County Council's Per Cent scheme and is narrated by Jeremy Irons.
The Chronoscope combines archive and shot footage which was manipulated in post to evoke the style and atmosphere of the era. Post Production took place at Screen Scene where Allen Sillery worked on the pictures in flame "The director wanted the main character to interact with Hitler, de Valera, Einstein and The Queen. Other newsreel footage from Ireland in the 1930's had to be doctored by compositing artists, banners and signs relevant to our story." Colourist Angella McLellen then graded the pictures on the Nucoda and Simon Thornton finished the project in Online.
