Hosted at Filmbase on the first Thursday of every month, ShortSpace is the place for filmmakers and film fans to get together, screen and discuss short films and short filmmaking.

Previous ShortSpace programmes include:

Location, Location, Location!
7pm, Thursday 4th August 2011

This session focussed on the topic of locations. On the night we spoke to a number of filmmakers about the various issues to bear in mind when deciding on locations for use in shorts and the practical issues that need to be taken in to account.

The Line-up:

HER MOTHER'S DAUGHTERS (2010)
6 min 30 sec
Written and Directed by Oonagh Kearney
Choreographed by Cindy Cummings
Produced by Rachel Lysaght & Steven Davenport

An Older Woman stands by a window in an empty house. Her daughters have flown the nest. As she waits for them to call, their memory is brought back to life. A short dance film exploring the relationship between mothers, daughters, memory and imagination.

Funded by RTE and the Arts Council as part of the RTE Dance On The Box Scheme which is administered by Filmbase. The film has screened at Helsinki's Loikka Dance Film Festival, the Corona Fastnet Film Festival in Cork (Best Cinematography, Best Experimental/Dance Film), Dance On Camera Festival in New York and London's Underwire Festival. It was also selected as one of thirteen films shortlisted from an entry of almost 1,000 for the Aesthetica Magazine Short Film Competition.

JOYRIDERS (2006)
15 min 30 sec
Written by Rebecca Daly & Glenn Montgomery
Directed by Rebecca Daly
Produced by Rachel Lysaght

As ten year old Kylie struggles to come to terms with her grief, she discovers that imagination can be more powerful than reality.

Best Short Film at the Irish Film & Television Academy Awards 2007 and Best First Irish Short at the Galway Film Fleadh 2006.

HUM (2010)
12 mins
Written and Directed by Rebecca Daly
Produced by Melanie Berke, Martin Heisler, Rachel Lysaght

The story of Hum begins in an abandoned house. Dead bees scatter every window ledge and lie, legs splayed, on the exposed floor. A mutilated piano waits upstairs in an empty afternoon. There is a strong sense of the past of the house, of its holding secrets, of its holding silences. A woman (Kerry Condon) climbs the wooden staircase, pausing to remove her shoes. She has come here in search of silence.

Hum was made through the Berlinale Talent Campus Short Film scheme.

RUNNERS (2009)
16 min
Written by Pierce Ryan
Directed by Rob and Ronan Burke
Produced by John Wallace

For eighteen year old Derek, running drugs isn't a big deal, it's just a job. But juggling a relationship, family and his 'career' isn't easy. Something has to give.

Best Short Film - 7th Irish Film and Television Awards 2010; Best International Short Film - Malibu International Film Festival 2010; Best Screenplay - Corona Fastnet Short Film festival 2010; Commendation - Belfast Film Festival 2010
